Guy and Girl, as overheard in the Barnes and Noble Bookstore cafe in Jackson, MS:
Guy: I might call you by the wrong name sometimes. Especially when I’m passionate. When I was a baby, I had a high fever. It altered my brain chemistry. So I get names mixed up. Can you deal with that?
Girl: Oh, baby. That’s awful! It, like, damaged your memory?
Guy: Yes. And my attention span. There’s a name for it, but I can’t even remember what it is. So when you’re with me, I might be looking all distracted. Looking at other people. It’s not you — it’s my condition.
Girl: That’s just terrible! (She takes both of Guy’s hands in her own.) Baby, I had no idea.
Guy: It’s tough, living with this brain damage. In fact, this is the same thing that keeps me from getting a job.
