My copy of the Comparative Tarot Collaborate Spirit deck arrives in the mail today. As with any anthology deck, the quality and style of the artwork varies from card to card. For me, the broad range of talent and skill represented here increases the appeal of the deck. Perhaps more than any deck I own, these cards “feel friendly.”
Or maybe that’s just the response of a proud pappa, since the deck includes three cards of my own design: the Devil, the Four of Wands, and the Two of Pentacles. Personal favorites from this deck include Ellen Lorenzi-Prince’s Five of Cups, Mari Hoshizaki’s Page of Cups, Jane’s Ace of Wands, and Tom Tadford Little’s Eight of Pentacles.
The deck, edited by Paula Gibby (creator of the Blue Rose Tarot) and Sally Anne Stephen, features a slick matte finish, smooth vinyl backing, and hand-trimmed edges. This quality craftsmanship characterizes the work of Carol Herzer, who self-publishes a number of decks available through her site, Soul-Guidance. (Her Cosmic Egg and Illuminated decks are personal favorites of mine.)
The deck is available only to contributors and to members of the Comparative Tarot mailing list. If you like the cards … there’s still time to join.
