All’s Well

All’s Well

Won’t bore you with the details … but all’s well, as it turns out, with the old ticker, and new meds should shortly bring the BP under control. As daily does of Benecar take effect (“The only real side effect,” says my cardiologist, “is poverty.”), my numbers are coming back into the human range.

Having my first echocardiogram was a unusual experience. Here I am, lying on my side, while a technician gouges my pectoral muscles with what looks like a lubricated hand-scanner.

On screen, I can see my own heart. The fist-sized muscle looks like an alien thing: wet, glistening, pulsing. Its valves look like protruding, puckered lips: chewing, kissing, chewing, kissing.

On a lark, I ask the technician, “Can you tell whether or not it’s a boy or a girl?”

She makes eyes at me, and says not a word.
