The local paper ran an article highlighting my Tarot workshops today. The writer, Cori Bolger, invested a lot of time and effort in the piece, working hard to get the details just right.
My favorite bit: the brief quote from a local Baptist minister who claims, according to the Bible, “(Tarot) circumvents a person’s relationship with God and relying on God’s will … In some instances, it’s false spirituality as well.”
Tellingly, he cites no Scripture that cites Tarot or references the use of Tarot as a tool for reflection. (Why? There aren’t any. So much for “speaking where the Bible speaks, and being silent where the Bible is silent.”)
Sadly, Butterfield’s mindset demonstrates a practice all too common in the fundamentalist clergy: when you know nothing about a subject, it’s easier to condemn it outright than to admit your own ignorance.
The bright side, though, are the quotes from so many people — housewives, students, professors, artists — who are realizing what a powerful tool Tarot can be for boosing creativity and insight!
