How to Say “No” in 500 Words or More

Earlier today, I dropped the folks at Sirius Satellite Radio a question that boils down to this: “Since you cancelled the music station I listened to the most (Soundscapes – New Age Music), lost the talk station I listened to every day (Air America), and started inserting ads (in the form of DJ-voiced paid placements) into your ‘commercial free’ programming, can you give me any reasons why I shouldn’t switch to XM?”

Eight hours later, I got this (rather stilted, apparently patched together out of several different form letters) reply:

At SIRIUS, we appreciate the time you have taken to contact us regarding New Age music. SIRIUS remains fully dedicated to providing an unparalleled variety of music programming on over 65 commercial free music channels in virtually every genre. Our streams are designed to please listeners of every listening preference.

In our effort to deliver un-compromised coast-to-coast music and entertainment for your car and home, we enhance our music and entertainment line-up from time to time. Changes to are made based on customer feedback. Currently, you can hear New Age music through Soundscapes on Horizons // 99. Tune in Sundays all day for Soundscapes and relax with best in new age sounds. Soundscapes features music from artists like John Tesh, Yanni, B-Tribe and Enya.

While Air America Radio has made the decision to leave SIRIUS, our commitment to great liberal talk programming continues. On SIRIUS Left // Ch. 143, we have an outstanding lineup of liberal talk including Ed Schultz, Alex Bennett, Lynn Samuels, Alan Colmes, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, The Young Turks, and more! We’re always looking to add or develop even more programs to give you the best variety of programming choices anywhere.

We continue to grow every day with new customers, new business opportunities and new listeners. Not every person that tunes into SIRIUS is completely aware of everything that we have to offer. Our listeners may be potential customers at retail outlets, rental car drivers, guests at hotels that we partner with, even visually impaired subscribers. Often, they do not have the information that is available to our subscribers. In an effort to continue to provide for the growth of SIRIUS, it is important to not only remind our current subscribers of the benefits of SIRIUS but also inform potential customers of what we have to offer.

From time to time, on-air personalities will supply listeners with information regarding other channels that relate either to what is being played or what is being talked about on the current station you are hearing. We will be happy to forward your comments and suggestions to our programming department for further consideration.

So, could Sirius cite any reasons why I should stick with them instead of switching to XM?

The short answer would be: “No.”
