Big Box o’ Tarot – Photos
We’ve opened and processed one of the four boxes of Tarot decks won in a recent eBay auction. You can see photos of the best of Box 1 up on flickr.
So? Anything good there? I don’t really know anything about older tarot decks (despite living with a tarot expert and working at a company that creates new decks). The photos were cool but did you come across anything that you got really excited about?
Good question.
That box was packed with lovely decks! There were several I thought were really exquisite, including the Picini (in terms of visual style, think “Austin Powers meets Prince”) and the Murciano. Years ago, I would have kept these for myself — and about a dozen others, to boot!
These days, though, I take a different approach to Tarot collection, and only keep on hand decks I will actually use in readings. So, from this group, I latched on to:
1) The Rider Tarot Deluxe. Have you seen one of these before? Gilt edges and a calming green backing make it one of the most beautiful RWS decks I’ve seen.
2) The Knapp-Hall. Until I find my 1929 version, this USG reprint will have to do.
3) A loose copy of the Ancient Art of Tarot deck. I’m selling the complete kit, but hanging onto a duplicate deck (minus the kit and book). This is just a 1970’s-era Rider-Waite rip-off, but it’s really a nice alternative to using my gilt-edged Rider Deluxe when reading for the public!
4) The Tarot de Napoleon. Exquisite! Exquisite! Exquisite! Bold minors, simple majors.
5) The Oracle of the Radiant Sun. Mass market? Yes. Still available cheaply? Yes. Beautiful. Oh, yes. And it comes with a great, concise book on Astrology, as well.
