Last year, I had the extraordinary experience of visiting Angkor Wat, one of the largest temple complexes on the planet. This year, just as I’ve been researching options for a return visit, I came across this incredible image of Angkor Wat as seen from a NASA satellite.
What memories this brings back. See the loooong bridge crossing the left-hand side of the moat? The day we were there, Cambodian children were splashing and playing in the water; some were even diving from the bridge itself.
Once you cross the moat, the temple walls all but hide the central complex. When you pass through the temple gates, your jaw drops as you realize your hike has just begun. (The walk from the gate to the complex is, as you can see, almost three times the length of the loooong bridge you’ve just crossed!)
From the gates, the temple complex looks fairly small, but, as you approach, the buildings loom larger and larger. By the time you reach them, the walls and towers are absolutely overwhelming.
