Here we are, during an exhausting and frustrating day. We’re smiling, though. Doesn’t that say a lot about us?

Our normally very reliable personal tour company delivered a spectacular series of gaffes today, driving us two hours outside of town to an orchid farm (closed) and the famous floating market (closed within a half-hour of our arrival).

It’s a shame, because the floating market, I think, could have been a lot of fun, had we not been hurried past the interesting market stalls on the riverside and herded into a boat for an interminable tour on the river … which ended just as the market was closing. Bad timing — not the sort of thing we’ve been led to expect from the company we’re working with.

The result? A three-hour drive in a tiny van for about thirty minutes of attractions and one very nice meal at the Rose Garden restaurant.

Tonight, we fared better, heading to Siam Namarit, the Broadway-style show everyone is buzzing about, but many in our group were simply too exhausted to stay awake for the spectacle. It’s hard to be awe-struck when your eyelids feel like lead.

Lesson learned: verify attraction hours before leaving, even when on a pre-arranged tour! (I’m going to advise the tour company operator — someone we’ve known for years now — that this tour shouldn’t be sold during the off-season.)
