10. Low prices, everyday. Outside the hotels, haircuts are less than a dollar.
9. The plentiful fresh seafood. Even the squid melts in your mouth.
8. The Ho Chi Min Mausoleum. For the five minutes I was inside, I actually wasn’t hot for a change.
7. The strict “No Tipping” policy at the Sofitel Metropole Hanoi. Five-star service from smiling people who don’t want a dollar in return.
6. Evenings. After a day of blow-torch heat, nightfall is like a visit from a long-forgotten lover.
5. Pho. Noodles. Meat. Broth. A huge bowl for eighty cents. What’s not to like?
4. Fresh spring rolls. Rice wrap on the outside; pork, shrimp, and vermicelli on the inside. I could make an entire meal of ’em — especially the ones stuffed with ground, spiced chicken.
3. The fried cuttlefish. I won’t touch it, but Clyde has eaten five whole fish in the last two days, eyeballs and all.
2. The mystery and majesty of Halong Bay. What a great backdrop for a future season of Survivor!
1. The daily chocolate buffet at the Sofitel Metropole. So many truffles, so little time.
