While it’s on my mind: before leaving on our Alaskan cruise, we saw several articles in the popular press about iPhones in Alaska. In short: the media is telling people that the iPhone won’t work in Alaska, that there’s no AT&T coverage in Alaska, and that customers with iPhones in Alaska will have their service disconnected within three months (due to AT&T not wanting to pay constant roaming charges).
For the record: my iPhone has shown authentic AT&T service in every port we’ve visited, including Icy Strait Point, Hoonah, Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchican. The Edge network is available here, making it possible for me to pull email and surf the web (albeit slowly!) in each of these ports, and every call I’ve placed has been loud and clear.
So: when it comes to the iPhone and Alaska, the media — as is so often the case lately — has it all wrong.
