In this heart-rending video, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders — a former opponent of gay marriage — explains his change of heart: “I just could not bring myself to tell an entire group of people in our community that they were less important, less worthy, or less deserving of the rights and responsibilities of marriage … simply because of their sexual orientation.”
Domestic partnerships and civil unions offer gay people important benefits … but these are well-intentioned, second-rate, “separate but equal” measures that fall far short of recognizing the validity and scope of our relationships with those we love.
In every way that matters, Clyde and I are married. It’s time for our civil and Federal government to recognize that fact. [link via Phil H.]
