When you buy new computer hardware, you don’t have to get permission from your Internet provider before plugging it into the network. When you upgrade, tweak, or delete that computer’s software, you don’t have to call your Internet provider get their approval before doing so.
So why do we put up with telephone service providers who constrain our hardware choices, render our hardware useless if we choose to personalize it, and limit what software can be installed on handsets we pay for?
These sentiments … and other wise words … are in Walt Mossberg’s blog today. [Link]
