Friends in Jackson, Mississippi, sent word to us of the extensive tornado damage in our old neighborhood there.
The road to the condo we lived in just prior to moving here has been closed — it’s completely choked by fallen pines. The beloved house on Baxter Drive was apparently spared, but houses next door and across the street were crushed by huge old trees. Many homes in on that street were ripped open by winds, leaving their contents (and residents) exposed to the elements.
Unable to find much in the way of photos in the media, we turned to YouTube, where we did spy this compelling (if foolhardy) video shot by an apartment resident; it’s a visceral testimony to the power of the storm. (And, as in the Blair Witch Project, what you don’t see in this clip is almost as frightening as what you do.)
When W. and D. drove by the Baxter house, they came up on a heart-rending scene: two elderly men standing in the middle of the street, hugging each other and crying.
My thoughts are with the folks in Jackson today. Here’s hoping the clean-up and recovery go as quickly as possible.
