Buenos Aires – Quick Notes and Impressions

– Our first breakfast at the Mira Vida Soho: French toast with maple syrup and fresh berries, thick slabs of real Canadian bacon, and several servings of cafe con leche. Perfection.

– Passing clouds kept us cool during our visit to the Casa Rosada, where Peronne and his wife, Evita, made the speeches that united the Argentine working class.

– We ducked into Tortoni, a splendid coffee house serving “Submarines.” As it turns out, these are not sandwiches, but a sort of hot chocolate. Each serving comes with a tiny chocolate submarine you submerge in a cup of hot milk. Stir. Sip. Repeat.

– The city is beautiful, with broad boulevards, monuments galore, and imported pigeons (“to make the place feel more like Paris,” our guide, Pablo, explained). Unfortunately, graffiti here is out of control … and virtually every square inch of monument or statuary within arm’s reach is “decorated” with political slogans and viral marketing stencils. Outlawing spray paint would go a long way toward making this city an even more attractive destination.

– The food! The food! Lunch today included handmade spinach ravioli stuffed with fresh mozzarella, freshly baked breads, humongous whole fishes, endless fries. And tonight, we enjoyed one of my life’s most memorable meals at La Cabrera: chorizo and provolone appetizers, an enormous caesar salad, steaks bigger than footballs, creamed corn, hearts of palm, mashed potatoes, artichoke hearts, and more — all topped off with chocolate truffle ice cream, fresh berries, and crepes.

(Parks, the oldest nephew, ate an entire 38-ounce steak — all by himself. Plus bread, veggies, sides, and a dessert. I’ve never seen anything like it outside a reality show.)
