For those who do not know, a Tim Tam is a chocolate biscuit. (In the States, where biscuits are fluffy things we serve with syrup or jelly or gravy, we’d call the Tim Tam a “cookie.”) In the plastic tray, Tim Tams look rather like elongated matchboxes dipped in chocolate.
But once in the mouth, the Tim Tam is much more — oh, so much more. First, there’s the rich, smooth, velvety texture of the outer coating. Then, there’s the satisfying crunch of the twin cookies inside. And finally, there’s the sweet, melty pleasure of the filling.
Australia and New Zealand love their chocolate biscuits. In fact, in New Zealand, even small neighborhood grocery stores are likely to maintain an entire aisle devoted to nothing but chocolate biscuits. There are thin biscuits, dark chocolate biscuits, filled biscuits, and biscuits of every possible shape, design, and flavor.
But, among all these, I am here to tell you that the Tim Tam reigns supreme. It is the Ultimate Chocolate Biscuit.
We brought two packages home. I am half-way through the first, and I am guarding the rest quite jealously. Soon, I fear, all my friends and acquaintances will be divided into two camps: those who are “Tim Tam worthy,” and those who are not.
If you are in the second camp, please don’t take it personally. It’s just that, here in the States, Tim Tams are rare as hen’s teeth … and there are only so many to go around.
Update: Whoo hoo! Tim Tams are coming to Target stores in the states for a limited time in October. Note to Target shoppers: when The Day comes, you are advised not to come between me and my Tim Tams.
Kia Ora Mark & Gang…Further ‘instructions’ on how to eat a Tim Tam…Try this; “The Tim Tam Straw”On diagonal corners, bite off a small piece… [you are allowed to eat this!] Now, place the lower bitten-off corner into your hot drink (coffee works best!). Slowly suck the coffee up into the Tim Tam (like you would use a straw). Remove the Tim Tam & place the WHOLE biscuit into your mouth…Result…gooey, creamy, and very addictive!!Just as well there are a few in the packet.
Donna! Hey! Thanks for stopping by my “virtual” homestead here atMadeByMark.com.Thanks again for the warm welcome when we were in NZ. When folks ask aboutthe highlights of our trip, our visit to your wonderful home always comes up… and folks who see pictures of us feeding the lambs are always jealous.
I left a great review on TripAdvisor yesterday … it should be up today ortomorrow. I figure it’s the least I can do to say “Thanks!” for the hardwork you and Stu put into offering such a fantastic tour.
Meantime: glad to see you here … and thanks for the Tim Tam tip. I willgive it a try … several times, you know, just to make sure I really likeit!
Try the caramel version with their sweet sliver of gooey caramel and light biscuit covering, mmm – I think I’ll get one now!
Vermont Country Store now sells Tim Tam to those of us in the States. Just sayin’
