I want the option to clip my Kindle notes and annotations directly and automagically to Evernote.
I love my Kindle, and I love the fact that it allows me to dog-ear pages, highlight text, and take notes as I read. Unfortunately, these annotations are stored in a file in the Kindle's memory. I can download that file to my trusty Mac for processing later … but the truth is, I'm not much for manual steps … so I rarely do it.
I also love Evernote. Like Yojimbo, Together, and other "everything box"-type software I used to use, Evernote provides a single container for all those little scraps of information (from lists to web clippings to contact information) that come my way. But because my Evernote collection is stored "in the cloud" — on Evernote's servers — I can get to that collection any time, anywhere, from any Internet-connected computer.
My Kindle has an "always on" connection to the Internet — so why shouldn't I be able to highlight a passage or jot a note … and have it automagically uploaded to my Evernote Inbox? There, because my notes will be indexed and filed, I'm far more likely to put them to good use.
Until this week, the Kindle pretty much dominated the ebook category … but now, with Barnes and Noble and others bringing out sleeker, more attractive hardware, the Kindle is going to have to up its game. One way to do that? Offer features the others don't. A software tweak like this one could run on existing hardware … and give my trusty Kindle new functionality that the competitors cannot match.
