The photo captures the angry red glow of an out-of-control fire in downtown Bangkok — one manifestation of the protest-related violence that has escalated today. What hit hard was the realization that this photo is of a section of the city very familiar to me — because it was the part of town we could see from our hotel window during our stay last January:
It's heart-breaking to read about this kind of violence in the "Land of Smiles" and hear that places I've visited not so long ago — like the Siam Square Cinemas and Central World, southeast Asia's second-largest shopping center – have been burned to the ground by arsonists.
My thoughts and prayers are with our friend Bobby, who lives just a SkyTrain stop or two away from the area pictured above, and all the good people of Bangkok.
