In a discussion with a young man who was adamant that being gay is a choice and that gay people “choose their lifestyle,” I said, “My experience was just like yours. You didn’t have to intellectually debate whether or not to prefer women. You didn’t have to weigh the pros and cons. You just liked what you liked.”
This made him really angry. “Don’t you tell me what my experience was! You don’t know my history! I did have to struggle! I did have a choice! I had experiences and confusion! And I made the difficult choice to be straight — and others should have to make it, too!”
Ah. Okay. I see.
