Atlanta’s Best Chocolates at Schakolad

As part of our little experiment in weight loss, we’re choosing to eat sweets just one day a week. When indulgences are limited, you want each treat to be as decadent as it can be. And that, friends, explains why I drove in Friday traffic from Midtown to Sandy Springs in the rain: because, when Indulgence Day comes, I want it to start with candy from Schakolad.

Squeezed into a strip mall between a GNC and a Publix, your local Schakolad Chocolate Factory lovingly creates handmade chocolates right there in the shop. Craig and Sheree are just about the friendliest, most enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet over a counter of chocolate delicacies. They’re passionate about their work, and they can’t wait to share their wares with you. The minute you’re in the store, in fact, you’ll be eating chocolate.

And what amazing chocolate this is! In addition to all the usual suspects — nut clusters, turtles, dipped Oreos, peanut butter cups, chocolate bark, champagne truffles — you’ll find unique candies you won’t find in other metro area shops.

I like the mojito mint truffle (shatter the protective dark chocolate shell, and you’ll be rewarded with a burst of chocolate mint, kissed by a drop of icy-sweet lime), the nut clusters, and the coffee-flavored treats. But my favorite is the Buddha Belly — a tiny chocolate figurine concealing any one of several secret fillings. Pop Buddha in your mouth, tune out the world, and wait for the mystery to unfold …

In addition to fresh candy made with the very best ingredients, you’ll find a small art gallery of chocolate sculpture here: edible boxes, edible logos, edible musical instruments, edible toys, edible alphabets — you get the idea. Frankly, if you can’t find your sweetie a different, delightful Valentine’s day treat in this place, you just aren’t trying.

We stumbled on Schakolad two weeks ago, during our first Indulgence Day, and that little taste of heaven kept me going all week. Last Saturday, we went back — only to arrive five minutes after closing time. (Doh!) So today, I braved the slick streets of Atlanta to make a Schakolad run on Friday … just to make sure I’d have treats worth eating when tomorrow comes.

This is great candy, made by great folks. Get yourself over to Schakolad.
