On Treat Day, I eat whatever I want. But since I’ve started eating more reasonably, I find that what I want (and how much I want of it) has dramatically changed.
We used to do “Indulgence Day,” engaging in all the excesses detailed in Tim Ferris’ 4 Hour Body plan. Now, though, that sort of over-indulgence no longer appeals to me. Instead, I eat reasonably during the week, and, on Saturday, I treat myself: a pancake instead of an omelette, a slice of pizza instead of a salad, a half-slice of cake with my afternoon apple, a hamburger in a bun instead of in a lettuce wrap.
But the urge to over-indulge, to eat a stack of pancakes, to eat a whole pizza, to eat a half-pound cheeseburger and fries, is gone. Processed foods, including old favorite snacks like Cheeze-Its and chips, taste caked with salt and slimy with grease. Fried foods, which used to be a mainstay of my diet, lack any appeal. Since I eat sugar just once a week, a very small slice of cake is all I can eat before feeling overwhelmed by sweetness.
As of today, I’ve lost thirty-one pounds. For the first time in almost two decades, I weigh less than 200 pounds, and I’m comfortable in slacks with a 36-inch waist. Mirrors, once avoided, are now my friends.
All of these things are treats, every day.
