Moving Beyond Yesterday

Moving Beyond Yesterday

I spend a lot of time looking back.

Why didn’t I write more? Why didn’t I write every day? Why wasn’t I more patient? Why didn’t I appreciate what I had? Why didn’t I work harder? Why didn’t I do a better job of self-promotion? Why didn’t I answer more softly? Why didn’t I listen more closely? Why didn’t I invest more time, pay more attention, act with more grace?

Why wasn’t I better?

Looking back — beating yourself up like this — it’s a trap.

In the end, you have today, and only today. The action you take right now, in this moment, shapes your tomorrow. If you spend today doing nothing but looking back, all the potential tomorrow holds will be tainted by what might have been.

Today, I will work harder. Today, I will pay more attention. Today, I will do work I really care about. Today, I will act with kindness and grace. Today, I will be a better person.

Today, right now, I will be the person I intend to be, by doing in this moment what my Best Self would do.
