Burma Opening Up?

Burma Opening Up?

One Rangoon cafe already offers a timely new version of the nation’s staple dish. “Democracy curry” joined the menu last month at the Bangkok Expresso Nudle Cafe. “It doesn’t sell that well, as people aren’t familiar with it yet,” admitted waitress May Thwe Win, 20. “But most diners finish the whole plate; it’s sweeter than other curries.”

Glad to see this USA Today story about the opening of Myanmar. While we’ve been all around it — and right up to the border — we’ve never been to Myanmar (still called Burma by most locals).

During our last visit to Chiang Rai, a ferryman offered to take us to the glitzy casino on the Burmese side of the river, but other travelers had told us tales of Americans who discovered that, as with the Hotel California, you can walk in to the casino any time you like, but leaving is an entirely different proposition.

Friends Bill and Jay tried to enter the country once through the airport, and, because they were Americans, they were detained, questioned, and expelled.

Here’s hoping “Democracy Curry” catches on. During our next expedition to Thailand, I’d love to take an overnight trip to Rangoon.
