The Baby Box Dilemma

The box is actually a warm incubator that can be opened from an outside wall of a hospital, where a desperate parent can anonymously leave an unwanted infant.

Crusaders contend that the boxes make it too easy for pimps and abusive men to force mothers to abandon newborns. Human rights advocates argue the boxes violate a child’s right to parental care and a parent’s right to state assistance. Statisticians note the boxes have had no impact at all on infant murder rates.

Still, an average of two children are deposited into each box per year.
