People hear about our plans and roll their eyes.
“Lima?” Long pause. “For the weekend?”
Well, um, yeah.
Here’s the thing: if you wait until you have weeks to spend in a foreign destination, then you’ll visit far fewer foreign destinations. From our point of view, sampling a city is a better strategy: drop in, stroll around, have a two- or three-day adventure, and fly back home. You can always come back.
And that’s why our long weekends in various places don’t feel rushed: we assume we’re coming back. So we sample the cuisine. We see a major tourist destination or two. We meet a few interesting locals. We do a little shopping. And then we have those long conversations over dinner: Could we live here? Would we like to come back for a week or two later on? Might the family want to come here for Christmas?
So, yes, absolutely: Lima, Peru, for a weekend. We won’t try to squeeze in Machu Pichu (we’re coming back, remember?), but we will check out Lima’s remarkably sophisticated food scene, wander the catacombs under the Monastery of San Francisco, walk the Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods, take in the dancing lights of the Magic Water Circuit in Reserve Park, and soak up the culture at the Museo Larco.
Pack your virtual bag (with cool clothes — it’s late summer in Lima, with temperatures in the eighties!) and come with us. It’s time for a weekend in Lima!
