Thanks to the creators of the Happy Cow app (and website), we’re having an easy time pegging the locations of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants as we make our way up the California coast.
That’s how we find Bliss, the “Good Karma Cuisine and Smoothy Juice Bar,” a cool, shady vegan and raw food cafe sequestered away in the back of a downtown shopping center. We spend a few minutes out on the patio waiting for service before we catch on that you order at the counter before taking a seat … but it’s a happy wait, with a pleasant view.
At the counter, I can’t decide between the spicy tempe tacos and the veggie chili dogs. Clyde, though, pounces on the Ruben sandwich, mostly because (I think) he knows I hate Ruben sandwiches, and he won’t have to share:
I finally give in and go with the tacos:
The tacos are tasty and spicy and fresh — but I gotta say, that’s a lot of tempe (a dense, soy-based meat substitute). I manage to eat three of the four (and pass the other one to Clyde, because, you know, I like to share). Clyde’s Ruben also features a thick slab of tempe, which I think he also finds pretty dense, as he can only eat a little more than half of the sizable sandwich.
Next time, I’ll definitely order the chili dogs … but I won’t repeat my order of the Happy Shiva juice drink, which combines carrot, cucumber, beet, and lemon juices with a pile of wheatgrass powder. For my tastes, the drink is very … green. As in “tastes like pine needles and grass clippings” green. It comes highly recommended from the counter staff, but is just not quite the right thing to go with dinner.
Pair a well-thought-out order with a shady spot on the back terrace, and you’ll have a happy dining experience here. Recommended.
