Near Flom, the stave church is a little older than the one down the block from your house. In fact, it was built in (and has stood pretty much unchanged since) 1100 A.D.
Perched atop the steeply angled architecture of its roof, you’ll find crosses … and dragons. Wise missionaries knew the locals see the dragon as a source for protection from evil spirits. Rather than try to beat ’em, they joined ’em — pairing Christian symbolism with Norse mythology.
Me? I felt right at home in a church with dragons on the roof and door.
