The Marshmallow Test

The Marshmallow Test

Ah, the marshmallow test! Designed to explore the subject’s capacity for “deferred gratification,” it poses a simple question: “Would you rather have one marshmallow now … or wait a few minutes and have two?” In theory, kids able to defer gratification and wait for the second marshmallow score better on aptitude tests and (in the future) make more trustworthy employees.

After seeing the response of the little girl about three minutes in, I’m thinking it might also be a test of the children’s faith in adults and their ability to keep their promises.

If this test used slices of thin-crust pepperoni pizza, I’m not sure how I’d do.
