Our first day on Maui starts with shopping in Lahaina, walking along Front Street. Finds include an outpost of the Honolulu Cookie Company, where the pineapple-shaped shortbreads have been dipped in dark chocolate.
After pretty good fish tacos at one of the local eateries, we drive up the twisty Hana Highway before making the mandatory trip to the Wal-Mart (where the chocolate macadamia nuts are six dollars a box less than they are in the souvenir shops).
Yes. We went to Maui, and we went to the Wal-Mart.
The crown jewel of the day? The Feast at LeLe, an intimate, high-end luau. No hog-caplin’ buffet here–instead, the gourmet Hawaiian delicacies are brought (along with unlimited drinks) to the table by foxy, friendly locals wrapped in orange sarongs.
Tour groups flock to the top-rated (and over-crowded) Old Lahaina Luau, where up to five hundred people battle for mediocre fare at a competitive buffet; I’m glad we chose The Feast, where all we have to do is relax, enjoy the tender shredded pork, island salsa chicken, swordfish, and soy-marinated steak, and watch the enthusiastic dancers performing routines that are well-timed and just long enough.
Headed back to the ship around nine, after watching the sunset while enjoying the company of good friends.
A nice start to the adventure!
