After some initial excitement over Amazon.com’s Kindle ebook reader, I’m now, upon further reflection, reluctant to buy into a reader that will only allow me to read what Amazon.com sells, owns, controls, and provides.
So I did some comparison shopping, and came across the elegant Cybook Gen3 reader. It may lack the Kindle’s (admittedly very cool) wireless component, but, in addition to being sleeker, sexier, and better-designed than the Kindle, it will allow me to read virtually any format, including the most popular standard ebook formats from multiple dealers.
In the end, the decision is really this: do you want to buy into a service limited to displaying the texts one vendor offers (and get, as a result, simplicity and some wireless bells and whistles), or do you want to buy a device that you can use to read any texts you like?
