I’ve taken almost three weeks off here at MadeByMark — one of the longest “dry runs” in the seven-year history of the site.
In some ways, that’s a good sign: it means that life is, at least temporarily, too full to allow time for me to stare into this little PowerMac. In other ways, though, that kind of break disappoints me. Good things happen every day, and failing to take time to note them strikes me as more than a little ungrateful.
The move to Atlanta has been a blessing — but it has radically impacted my free time. In the early mornings, I’m obligated to write for Lo Scarabeo. By 9:00, I have to be in my place at The Company, where the volume of work and the pace of the day does not provide a single minute for updating a personal blog. When I get home at 6:00 — after a long day of staring at computer screens — the last thing I want to do is sit down and stare at a computer screen some more.
So: I’ve taken some Turkey Day time-off to make some behind the scenes changes designed to make posting to the site quicker and easier. I’m introducing some other changes, too:
– I keep wishing I had a place to store my “MustSee” list of movies. Now I do, and that place is MadeByMark. Now, when I come across a movie that appeals to me, I’m going to note it here with a short post and a link to the movie’s official site. I’ll probably do the same with books and videos.
– Every day, I spend my lunch half-hour browsing my favorite sites in order to keep up with technology and entertainment news. Now, links to most of the articles I read will appear here, too, either in the main feed or in the new box in the lower right sidebar: Marks’ Web Trail.
– I love writing essays, but longer posts take a long time to write and edit. I’m going to be experimenting with shorter, simpler posts (made more frequently), with the occasional longer post thrown in from time to time.
My areas of interest remain the same; I’m just trying to strike a new balance between the demands of my new schedule and my desire to keep MadeByMark alive, fresh, useful, and relevant.
Thanks for sticking with me.
– M.
