Dream iPhone Feature: Call Blacklisting

Dream iPhone Feature: Call Blacklisting

BlacklistWhy doesn’t my iPhone — or every phone for that matter — have built-in “Call Blacklisting?”

Call blacklisting would add any number you chose to a list of banned callers. Got an annoying ex-boyfriend? Type his number into the blacklist. Getting repeated annoyance calls from some unfortunate soul who doesn’t understand the meaning of the term, “Wrong number!”? Add him to the blacklist. Beset by telemarketers? Add their numbers — or even, with a single entry, all “Number Blocked” callers — to the blacklist.

When blacklisted callers ring me up, they might hear a recorded message (“We’re sorry. The person you are dialing is no longer accepting calls from your number.”). They might hear perpetual ringing. They might hear nothing at all.

Ultimately, though, I don’t care what the blacklisted caller hears. All I care about is this: when a blacklisted caller phones me up, I don’t want my iPhone to ring at all.

Update: Looks like this feature is already available for Windows Mobile-based phones. Perhaps once Apple opens up 3rd party development, someone will whip something up for the iPhone.

  • If you use grandcentral.com, you can have this feature today; you can either send a “This number is no longer in service” or blacklist the call altogether.

  • iBlacklist is a great idea … but I don’t want to jailbreak my phone.

There was a time when jailbreaking would have appealed to me, but I just don’t have the time or energy to invest in jailbreaking.

Let’s hope that this app, like so many other apps designed for jailbroken phones, makes the leap to a legitimate app sometime soon.
