Food Worth Walking For

Places I walk to, on a regular basis, since moving to Atlanta:

EinsteinsEinstein’s. It’s right next door … so why not? While the menu is packed with pricey entrees, you can still snag a pretty good burger with sweet potato fries for under ten bucks. Follow it up with the Fudge Fusion Reactor (an ice cream dish served on a super-cooled platter that gushes dry-ice fog), and you’re good to go.

Sbydee. A seven minute walk takes us to Sbydee, a not-bad choice for Thai food. Appetizers are stingy, but entrees are more generous. Personally? I think Jitlada offers better food at better prices … but walking from Midtown to Cheshire Bridge would be a pain.

Joesjuniper2-1Joe’s on Juniper. The thumpa-thumpa disco tunes can make this place painfully noisy on weekends, but on weekdays, Joe’s has more of a “neighborhood bar and grill” vibe. The burgers are good, the hotdogs are better, and even the entrees (stuffed shells, pasta dishes) are worthwhile. The cute servers are friendly but the kitchen is sloooow — so if you’re very hungry or very hurried, rule Joe’s out.

Noodle. Hot. Urban. Tasty. Inexpensive. What more could you ask for from a neighborhood eatery? Grab a seat at Noodle’s communal tables and help yourself to some of Midtown’s best food at bargain prices. Clyde’s seafood soup was packed with delicious sea creatures, and my pad thai, though not spicy at all, was lip-smacking good.

Little Azio’s. Next door to Noodle, Little Azio’s offers pretty good pasta and pretty good thin-crust pizza at pretty good prices. It’s no Pizza Shack.

Mulan. Bland Chinese buffets are so ubiquitous these days, you tend to forget how delicious authentic Chinese cuisine can be — especially when it’s prepared just for you. “Bill,” the owner, makes meals at Mulan a joy with his generous spirit and gleeful demeanor … and the food is just spectacular. A tip: unbeatable lunch specials give you generous servings of Mulan’s best entrees at a fraction of the dinner menu price.

And … some food not worth walking for:

WillysmexicanWilly’s Mexicana Grill. Cramped. Noisy. Overrated. Think “Moe’s in the Park,” with burritos featuring more rice than meat. One visit to Willy’s was enough for me.
