A longboat trip on the canals is a Bangkok standard — touristy as all get-out, but something you have to do. Today’s trip douses us all in refreshing “L’eau du Chao Praya” — a fragrance unlikely to catch on in the West.

The snake ranch we visit brings back happy memories — a reminder that some things never change. There are changes afoot in Bangkok, though, as a lunch-time run-in with a group of protesters reminds us. Not everyone is happy with the military coup that removed the Prime Minister from power, and the signs of that — heightened security at the hotel, roads lined with yellow-scarved protesters — are abundant.
