News Made Simple: Bush’s Veto

Bushandbaby

The Story: President Bush vetoed federal funding for stem cell research. With a baby on his arm, the President said such research “crosses a moral boundary” and amounts to murder.

What the Press Doesn’t Stress: The embryos President Bush says he wants to protect are unused embryos created during fertility clinic procedures. If unused, these embryos are likely to be destroyed. They still will be.

The Question You Should Ask: If the President really believes that destroying these embryos amounts to murder, why isn’t he closing fertility clinics, stopping fertility treatments, and arresting fertility doctors and their assistants?

On a Related Note: In his remarks, President Bush said, “If this bill would have become law, American taxpayers would, for the first time in our history, be compelled to fund the deliberate destruction of human embryos.”

It’s a pity his passionate concern for human life failed to restrain him from waging an illegal war based on false pretenses — a rather expensive federal program compelling American taxpayers to fund the deliberate destruction of human adults.
