When in Germany

When in Germany

We’re in Frankfurt, where we’re having a wonderful time. This surprises us, as so many friends greeted news of our German destination with looks of shock. “Frankfurt?” they asked. “What’s in Frankfurt?”

Many banks, of course — there are more than 350 banks based here. But Frankfurt has much to offer as a springboard to other parts of Germany. Centrally located, Frankfurt has served us well as a point of departure to Rothenburg, the Rhine River valley, and Heidelberg. Today, we’re off to Munich; tomorrow, we’ll take a trip up to Bonn and Cologne.

It’s the off-season, so we are two of very few travelers making our way from city to city. Last night, we joined a remarkably friendly Australian couple for a visit to the Rhine River valley. We were the only four people on the cruise ship, which would have been creepy if we weren’t having such a good time. Four locals joined us in the restaurant … and we were again the only folks at the winery.

A nice moment, yesterday: Clyde sitting by my side, sailing down Father Rhine (as the Germans call the river), the sun just atop the hills on our right, with castles drifting past. Earlier in the day, we made our way through the shops of Heidelberg, where we discovered really good walnut truffles and fresh cream puffs.

So: if you get the chance to come here … don’t hesitate!
