My alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, is embroiled in another controversy — this time, whether the school improperly dismissed tenured faculty for speaking out against the school’s president.
Ah, USM. Ah, the presidency. This kind of talk brings back memories…
Disgruntled that we were paid less than any other graduate students in the state of Mississippi, a small group of us made an appointment to see then-president Dr. Aubrey Lucas. In my role as a designated spokesperson, I related a story about not having enough money to make ends meet — about having to decide between paying rent and buying groceries.
Dr. Lucas peered at me through his little round glasses, adjusted his trademark bowtie, and said, “Mr. McElroy, you don’t appear to me to have missed very many meals.”
