Kissing Cousins

Kissing Cousins

A big difference in Atlanta and Jackson: Atlanta people greet each other with kisses.

Jackson people shake hands and hug, but after my extended absence from Atlanta, I’m always surprised (and pleasantly so) by how much more affectionate and intimate a quick greeting kiss can be.

John meets us at the car with a kiss. Jeri gives us a squeeze and a kiss. Phil says hello and gives me a smack on the cheek. Matthew and Bill beam with holiday cheer and, briefly, give me a smooch. Even some folks I barely know say hello with fervent osculation.

I like it. I may start doing it.

Jacksonians: you’ve been warned.
