Jerry Falwell’s league of fundamentalist fanatics has launched OneManOneWoman.com, where they claim to be collecting “tens of thousands” of signatures on a petition supporting the Federal Marriage Amendment.
We’re hearing a lot about defending marriage these days. Apparently, it needs it — half of all marriages end in divorce. But if defending marriage is really the goal … wouldn’t it make more sense to outlaw divorce?
Tongue in cheek, I sent the following message to Dr. Falwell. If he ever replies, I’ll let you know:
Dear Rev. Dr. Falwell:
I noted with great interest your recent decision to move to the forefront of the defense of marriage, and the launch of your new website, OneManOneWoman.com.
I share your concerns about marriage in America. After all, half of all marriages end in divorce!
But if the defense of marriage is actually our goal … wouldn’t we do better to throw our energy behind an effort to outlaw divorce?
Inspired by your website, OneManOneWoman.com, I’m suggesting that we come together in support of the idea that marriage should be between one man and one woman … ONE TIME.
The principle is simple: we allow people to get married once, and only once, and we remove the option of divorce, period.
This way, instead of basing the defense of marriage on the denial of marriage to others, we could attack the real threat — divorce — head on.
Overnight, Dr. Falwell, the divorce rate would fall to ZERO PERCENT.
What do you think?

thanks for standing up and getting america to take notice! This country has lost alot of morals and dergree of respect for others. America needs to understand the importance of the union of marriage. It is a God given value. Two people, a man and woman are only designed in this union, because each union is male and female. That is how God made it,even at the beginning of time. God bless you for all your efforts!
I stand with you form one man and one woman in marriage thats the way God wanted and we should keep it that way. I feel we have let the govement change enough
WHAT HAS THE GOVERNMENT DONE IN THE LAST THIRTY YEARS THAT MAKES THEM THINK THEY ARE QUALIFIED TO BE INVOLVED IN MY PERSONAL AFFAIRS ENOUGH TO TELL ME THAT I SHOULD TOLERATE SAME SEX MARRIAGES?CHRISTIAN VALUES ARE THE ONLY VALUES THAT I WOULD RECOGNIZE.

The message in the Bible is GOOD ENOUGH for me,one man, one woman. My prayer is that God’s waywill be upheld. I will continue to pray for those that are lost.
Bob: First, ease off on the caps lock key! On the Internet, typing in all caps comes across as screaming at people.
Then again, maybe you meant to be screaming! 🙂
In response to your post, I raise two points:
1) Exactly how does the government granting marriage rights to *others* involve the government in *your* personal affairs?
2) You write that “Christian values are the only ones that [you] would recognize.” That’s cool.
The wonderful thing about being in America is that *nobody* has to recognize anyone else’s religious values.
The government, however, isn’t supposed to be recognizing any one set of religious conclusions over the other. In the government’s eyes, all religious convictions must be regarded as equal.
So: while it’s fine for you to say, “I don’t think gay marriages are Christian,” the goverment, if it’s going to stop gay marriages, must come up with other reasons for doing so.
Dorothy:
I think it’s great to pray that “God’s way” be upheld. (It’s pretty safe, too, since the Bible makes it pretty clear that God’s gonna get His way, regardless.)
My prayer is this: I want to be protected from people who confuse THEIR WAY with God’s way.
You see, I come across a lot of folks who are all too eager to tell me what God thinks. They think they’re got God all figured out, and they’re just itchin’ to represent Him.
Fortunately, this is where our right to freedom of religion comes into play. While you and I never have to agree on what we believe, we are supposed to “live and let live,” as far as religious conclusions are concerned.
More importantly, the government isn’t supposed to side with either of us.
Thanks for stopping by,Mark
I don’t understand what Mark is saying. I mean, I understand, but I don’t understand what he means outlawing divorce. I mean, I do not believe in divorce myself, but what does it have to do with only men and women being married, which I do believe.

I am against, 100%plus,gay and lezbo unions. Actually the union is not really a union, it can’t be. Only by fake methods. There is nothing about it that is real. It is sick and I am sick of it being forced down mine and my families throat. I and all my family have signed Jerry Falwell’s petition. Keep it in the closet where it belongs! This world, because of the unreasonable strange Left, is headed for a big clash.
Calling gay and lesbian unions “unreal” or “sick” is, in the end, just name-calling. That’s neither insightful or useful, is it?
You also say you’re tired of this issue being “forced down your throat.” The irony here is that my pursuit of a marriage to my partner of ten years doesn’t force YOU to do anything at all. It doesn’t stop you from getting married. It doesn’t even stop you from saying you think such marriages are sick or unreal.
Your approach, however — to forbid gay marriage on the basis of your distaste for it — is specifically calculated to have an impact on the lives of other people. In taking this course of action, you’re seekig to force ME to live according to YOUR moral conclusions.
If anyone here is ramming things down other people’s throats … it’s people just like you.
What people wish to do together is their PRIVATEbusiness. I have no problem with recognition of significant other being the heir or beneficiary of anothers’ estate/affairs if so designated by the “partner”. And I think that should be the law in this land considering the fact that some CHOOSE to live in that situation. But, “Marriage” ia a religeous institution biblically ordained to a man and a woman.Animals do not marry, but they mate. Only human males and females are married as an ordinance of the Creator. What is wrong with the “state” passing laws which reguard life partners with the same legal aspects enjoyed by married men and women? Why does the homosexual lobby have to have the title “married”? The majority shouldn’thave to conform to the minority’s will.
It is amazing to me that masses of people believe that homosexuals are “made that way”. They have chosen that life-style. God does not make mistakes and if anyone has difficulty with that, all you have to do is to look down–male? female?Manwoman–create, manman or womanwoman—sin and along with all the other sins of this nation, lead to destruction. Read the history of the world. Every nation that sacrificed their children and practiced homosexuality has been destroyed. Since the people can’t determine right from wrong, it is time for the government to make laws based on God’s word to protect this nation. God loves each one of us, but does not tolerate continuance of sin. Think about it folks. Is your pleasure worth going to hell for eternity>>>>>>>>>>>>May God bless each one of us.It does not matter in the grand scheme of things whether you believe in God’s Word or not. Every knee will bow to our Lord and Savior and each one of us will be judged!
Hi, Joel. You wrote:

On this, we agree. Then, you wrote:
“But, ‘Marriage’ ia a religeous institution biblically ordained to a man and a woman.”
Here, you’re just plain wrong. Here’s why:
All the squawking about marriage being God-ordained overlooks a simple fact: in America, marriage is a LEGAL, STATE institution that the state ALLOWS churches to administer.
Want proof? You can go downtown right now, get married by the Justice of the Peace, never involve a religious institution of any kind … and you’ll still be married in every meaningful legal sense of the word.
On the other hand, if you run down to your local church, have the preacher say “I now pronounce you man and wife,” but FAIL TO FILE THE PROPER STATE FORMS … your marriage will not be recognized by the state.
Your final statement — “The majority shouldn’thave to conform to the minority’s will” — amazes me.
As any student of the civil rights movement in America will tell you, laws exist to protect minorities from the tyranny of the majority … not the other way around. Thank God the Supreme Court doesn’t think like you do … or here in Mississippi we’d still have seperate drinking fountains for blacks and whites.
Johnnye wrote: It is amazing to me that masses of people believe that homosexuals are “made that way”. They have chosen that life-style.
Mark notes: The question under discussion is not “Do homosexuals choose to be homosexual?”. The question is: “Should a homosexual person be allowed to marry the individual he or she wants to marry?”.
Johnnye writes: Since the people can’t determine right from wrong, it is time for the government to make laws based on God’s word to protect this nation.
Mark notes: You’re exactly the sort of person the Founding Fathers sought to protect America from.
How would you like it if the Mormons pushed through a law demanding you accept the Book of Mormon as Holy Scripture? How would you like it if Catholics pushed for a law asking the state not to recognize any marriages performed by organizations other than the Catholic church?
In America, our government isn’t involved in making laws “based on God’s word.” This strikes me as a very wise thing, since no two religious groups can agree on exactly what God’s will really is.
Johnnye wrote: It does not matter in the grand scheme of things whether you believe in God’s Word or not. Every knee will bow to our Lord and Savior and each one of us will be judged!
Mark notes: I’m fine with God’s judgment. What scares me to death is people like you, who feel completely comfortable judging others because they mistake their own conclusions for the will of God.
None of you People should have any decision on if gays should be married…It doesnt concern you over 80 percent of you smart people are probably divorced right now and also sinners Let GOD be the Judge not yourself..My partner and i have been together 10 years and we would like rights same as all the idiot married straight people call it what you want we just want to have our taxes filed together insurance together and other rights I dont care if you call it marriage or not but some of you say some stupid things and have no right to judge anyone unless perhaps one of you are GOD himself
