Last time we were in Detroit, we had a memorable breakfast at Russell Street Deli — for all the right reasons. Locally-sourced food — right down to the turkey used to make the succulent sausages — meant everything we ordered tasted fresh. From the coffee to the pancakes (served, of course, with real maple syrup), every single thing we tasted delighted us.
Things change, though, and today’s meal at the Russell Street Deli reminded us of that. The service was still great, and the coffee warmed us up just fine … but the food here now is simply mediocre. My pancakes, generic and dry, could have come from virtually anywhere. The turkey sausage was too dry and too tough to eat. (Think sawdust, moulded into disks, and flaked with red pepper.) And Clyde’s omelette, instead of a gracious affair packed with fresh veggies? Small — even stingy, really.
Maybe that’s why tables were so easy to come by! At any rate, we enjoyed the company of our friends and made the best of things. While the charm of a snowy morning is lost on locals, we got a great kick out of sipping our coffee and watching the fat, white flakes rain down on the shoppers in the Eastern Market.
