During a performance of The Laramie Project, a play which examines the homophobic attitudes that led up to the brutal murder of Matthew Shephard, a group of Ole Miss students allegedly talked loudly on cell phones, disparaged the body types of the actors, and shouted epithets (including “fag”). The college paper offers this write-up.
Ironically, some of the hecklers were also members of the football team — young black men who, no so long ago, because of bigotry against African Americans, would have been barred from the very university they now play football for.
Now, for better or worse, the nation’s watching. Here’s hoping the university’s faculty and staff are wise enough to investigate thoroughly and take swift and appropriate action.
