Windmills at Children’s Dyke

Windmills at Children’s Dyke

On the way to the airport, we took a little detour out to Kinderdjike, or “Children’s Dyke.” Stories about the name’s origin vary, but my favorite is the tale of the baby pulled from the water (like Moses!) after locals spotted a frisky cat working hard to keep the basket balanced in the turbulent flood. The windmills are still inhabited and still assist with water management, though the heavy lifting is done now with diesel engines and modern turbines.
