As so-called reality shows go, Survivor isn’t bad. But when it comes down to it, there isn’t much real survival involved. Yes, they eat grubs. Yes, they work their way through elaborately staged competitions. Yes, they do without Internet access for thirty-one days. But they’re often doing so in the shadows of luxury resorts, and when things go wrong, the producers are there with a medical team to fly injured contestants to safety.
Here’s a real survival story for you: Former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell found himself half-naked behind enemy lines, plugging holes in his body with dirt to keep from bleeding to death. Ultimately, his survival hinged on a relationship with an unlikely ally.
(A tip of the hat to Media ReDEF for drawing this story to my attention.)
